Rundown: Memory Tapes at The Lowbrow Palace

Memory Tapes // Computer Magic // School Dance: Saturday, July 11 @ The Lowbrow Palace

Memory Tapes

New Jersey native Dayve Hawk released a handful of EPs under the dual monikers Memory Cassette and Weird Tapes before landing a record deal and releasing his debut LP Seek Magic in 2009 as Memory Tapes. The names, and new portmanteau, were fitting – at the time, Hawk was creating the best kind of lo-fi, nostalgia-drenched bedroom dream pop associated with the arrival (and quick exit) of the so-called chillwave genre, alongside peers like Toro y Moi and Washed Out. Just like those contemporaries, Hawk’s music isn’t easy to pin down. Seek Magic marked a departure from the tape hiss and haze of his first EPs, injecting a little bit of dance into Hawk’s gossamer-wrapped samples and loops. He followed that with the “band” sound and indie rock watercolor of 2011’s Player Piano – which spawned the Grammy-nominated music video for “Yes I Know” – and Grace/Confusion on Carpark Records in 2012.
