A Square is a Square is a Square
Art Obscura Gallery presents “A Square is a Square is a Square,” a collaboration with the NMSU Department of Art course Art 450, an advanced painting and drawing class offered this summer. Professor Tauna Cole-Dorn set the class’ theme as “small works,” challenging students to produce 16 paintings or drawings each based on their own written proposals for the series. Students chose either 4″ x 4″ or 6″ x 6″ to create a body of work. The limitation in size challenges artists to consider scale, technique and imagery on a different level, as well as how they envision presenting their work for an exhibition. Artists include Lisa Lopez, Kerry Forsythe, Monique Harrison, Joseph Valdez, Katy Neely and Ann Marie “Alexis” Gallegos. “A Square is a Square is a Square” opens with a reception at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 11, and will remain on display through the first week of August.
Upstairs in the Tiny Room Gallery is an exhibition of tiny artworks depicting life in the Land of Enchantment, that speak to the diverse vastness of all that is New Mexico.

Beyond Pluto: The Clyde Tombaugh Story
Branigan Cultural Center presents “Beyond Pluto: The Clyde Tombaugh Story,” continuing through the month of July. Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto when he was only 24 years old and before he had any formal training. It was only the beginning of his story. Join the Branigan Cultural Center, in conjunction with the Las Cruces Museum of Nature & Science, to learn about the history of this famed astronomer, from his rural Kansas roots through his work at White Sands Missile Range. The exhibit is timed to coincide with the exciting “flyby” of the New Horizons spacecraft, which will come within 6200 miles of Pluto on July 14. Throughout the run of “Beyond Pluto” the museums will bring you special programming to celebrate the life of Tombaugh and his many contributions to astronomy and to the Las Cruces region. The Las Cruces Museums will host a series of events, classes, and lectures during the months of June and July. Highlights include workshops on rockets at the Museum of Nature & Science, a “Night Under the Stars” evening event sponsored by the Friends of the Las Cruces Museums, and a star party at the Railroad Museum. Zawacki paints primarily with oils and pastels, and teachers group art classes in Las Cruces, drawing on a more than 20-year career as an advertising art director and graphic designer. Nichols has been a photographer for 48 years, and has digitized most of his color and black-and-white negatives and slides from years ago.
